The human eye is naturally drawn to windows, partially because they’re analogous. Windows are a house’s eyes, after all. But like human eyes, not all eyes fit the person. It often needs a bit of “dressing up,” so to speak, in the form of eyeglasses, makeup, contact lenses and other accessories.
While you can’t replace your own eyes, you can replace your windows. This is your advantage. Not all windows that come with your new place can work for what you want a particular room to be, though. In today’s post by Renewal by Andersen® of Phoenix, here are some of our recommendations when it comes to pairing window styles to your interior.
Match the Architectural Style
The type of window you need for a room should match the overall architectural theme of your home. For example, you wouldn’t want a modern-looking window (such as a three-panel sliding window) for an ancestral home that was built in the 19th century.
Match the approximate era with style and you’ll be halfway set. For example, casement windows are great for these kinds of homes, particularly Prairie, Cape Cod and Colonial.
Match to Function
You wouldn’t use a totally transparent floor-to-ceiling window with your bathroom, right? This means you should match form to function. For example, a bay window can be great for living areas, bedrooms or a cozy den where it can be used as additional seating or a small nook.
Matching form to function is also applicable to available space. Use sliding windows, for instance, for smaller rooms where swing clearance is a bit hard to go by.
Match Lighting to Your Room
The more illuminated the room is, the prettier it looks. Sunlight often highlights and accentuates the most beautiful features of any room by creating contrast. In cases where you need more lighting or you just want to invite the exterior view into your interior, opt for windows with expansive glass areas. Picture windows are great for this purpose. For straight-up lighting, such as in the basement, awning windows set near the ceiling are natural choices.
