Hinged French doors are especially compatible with traditional architecture. Their timeless design is simple and attractive. French doors can also add an Old World charm to your home. Here are some of the ways to style Renewal by Andersen® hinged French doors for traditional homes:
Choose Traditional Grilles and Shapes
French doors typically have symmetrical grilles based on Colonial architecture, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to just that particular style. In fact, we offer three grille styles in addition to Colonial: Prairie, Short Fractional (similar to traditional Farmhouse grilles), and Tall Fractional. We can also build other grille shapes if you have a design in mind.
Combine French Doors with Specialty Windows
Specialty windows are fixed windows with non-standard shapes. They could be half-circles, triangles or polygons with more than four sides. While they look great on their own, specialty windows can be combined with a hinged French door to make it look larger while letting in more natural light. In addition to our 13 standard shapes and grille patterns, we can also build any specialty window shape you want.
Choose a Natural Color Palette
While there are no hard and fast rules on what color palette you should choose, certain color palettes look great with traditional architecture. Tones based on natural wood, stone and brick are often the best. This is why our Frenchwood® patio doors are available in stainable pine, oak and maple finishes. Our replacement windows are also available in the same wood finishes, so that you can coordinate your windows with your French doors.
Natural Hardware Finishes
Door hardware is an often overlooked part of doors and windows. But like a well-selected grille pattern, the right door hardware finish can add authenticity to traditional designs. We recommend our bronze hardware, as it has a “living” finish that develops a natural patina. This patina will look even more beautiful over time.
